Irish Born Chinese

Chinese included as trial programme for selected schools from 2014

Why haven't I come across this news before? There's going to be a re-haul of the Junior Certificate programme and will include options like computer coding and Chinese. The latter is very good news. Mandarin is finally recognised as a foreign language and will be officially taught in school. It's going to be on a trial run and won't start till 2014.

It will be interesting to see how many students take up Mandarin, how they fare in their assessments in that subject and will they continue on with Mandarin as their second/third language? Or will the language just end up being used in holiday situations like French, German, etc.?
