Yeah, Limerick does not have a base as large as Dublin, and same as in Dublin, money still needs to be sought for events like this, and Chinese business peeps needs to be convinced. :? Hmm, would there be enough interest for folks to do this? Maybe be part of the St. Patrick's day parade or something as a start :?:

chinatown

Malaysia it is!

While there probably wouldn't be a large enough base in Limerick, there might be if other Chinese from Cork and Galway were involved, with Limerick as a central location. But with money being a bit short, it probably would be a good idea to do it in tandem with St. Patrick's day parade. Last year a French market was held as part of the festivities, why can't a Chinese one be held in the city.

Anyways, for something like this to happen the initative would have to come from UL and Limerick City Council, like in Dublin. It would be great if they could get one of the ground in time for the Beijing Olympics. I was at the launch of the Chinatown festival in Dublin City Council and it seemed to be part of an Anti-racism campaign. Perhaps they're able to draw down funds from the Government to get this thing of the ground... [/quote]

Interesting thought. UL has many Chinese students, and they have a society of some kind. I did not know of one when I was studying there. But my cousin Jo knows of it. I might ask her about it.

She's a really really powerful woman dude she does everything... yeah they usually don't get stuff organised ever... they ring you come and that's how everyhting is done including big important events

A chinatown would be so cool!!! but then like wouldn't it be cool to have a little italien town and stuff like that too.... ok ok going off subject if you were to open a shop there i can honestly say lots of little bits and bobs liek hello kitty stuff that peole just love that other shops only sell a little of or else you could do like music or games... phone stuff even???

yeah Dr. Chan kinda sticks out like a sore thumb... you know dame street?? i thought that was chinatown.... but then that was when i was looking at this site and vicky had a thing saying that there was one that no one knew about...

umm would it be kidna like the milenium dome?? i heard about that being a great big hoax cause it was just a massive tent...

i think we will get a chinatown and i think it won't be too long considering what that woman has managed to do already she's only been around for two years and look at the impact she has made already!

The problem with getting a Chinatown in Dub isn't the people.
There is def enough Chinese to make a huge Chinatown.
The prob is the Irish government and the planning commission.

Where would the chinatown be located. :(
Even if a suitable place was found eg) maybe change Drury Street into one. But than there would be complaints and rejections by the locals. The Irish gov would take years to ratify it, and the planning permission would be slow too.

Just look at the Luas and the future Metro, not to forget the motorways, Port Tunnel etc etc.
:x
I think a Chinatown would be cool too.
Don't think Dublin is well planned and constructed enough to have one though.
There should also be a Little Italy, Little France and Spanish town 8)

Sorry.
Didn't read the previous ones.
Too much to read too little time.
:(

As you know I am not a Dubliner nor would I wish to be.
So where's Capel Street.???????
I know in monopoly game, it is the red colour along with Henry Street.
So it must be near Henry Street. :?

Well i'm pretty much neutral regarding the idea. Oh it's not that i don't think it's a good idea; it's just:
(A) I'm a Limerick person (no current desires to become a Dubliner.. pernamently)
(B) No real experience or foresight to make any real practical assessments

However i would say Dublin would be geared nicely towards it. It certainly has the population base and supporting resources to make it viable. With the large multi-national cultural base there; a ChinaTown would be something unique / exotic which should help boost the local economy (not that it needs a boost compared to how the rest of Ireland -especially the west is doing). The toughest part would be the paper work.
One can never be too cautious...

yeah the plans will be delayed for years.
Just look at the M50, it wil never be finished.
This country has too much beuracracy...
It is unfortunate.

Irish workers can be extremely competent
eg) look at the London ring motorway the M25.
That was built by Irish. In record time.
But paperwork, corruption, evil dealings will put a halt to any good idea

as a fellow dubliner i'd like to say i have no idea where capel street is at all!!!

i think the only problem is that this place would be where all the kinda rough chinese gangs would start hanging out cause i'm quite sure that would happen... and then it'd be giving us all a bad name and one thing would lead to another and the place would become a little black spot of dublin..... well that's my opinion anyhow....

That is so true.
The triads would be as well known as the Limerick gangs, who have dominated the news in Ireland as of late....

We need hard working, decent Chinese if they are immigrants and of course us Irish born ones who in general are decent already. (I hope) :? to make Chinatown to work

If this does happen, lets just hope nothing like those triade films with Ekin Chen, occur here.
It will be difficult to walk the streets without people giving you a weird eye.
I mean I have a lot of friends who have had difficulties accepting the african women who have 3-4 babies every year.. Even I don't agree with them.

Again I said I don't mind hard working africans who come over to work but not the ones who have multiple babies and take welfare :(

i think it's gonna be impossible to keep it all safe and stuff.. with the stuff that there's rumours about already I dunno it's a bit crazy honestly and we don't even have a Chinatown yet! imagine the possiblities like say if they have like another SARS problem in HK people will be running from the Chinatown for obvious reasons... Same thing happened at chinese school sure people just don't trust things liek thsi when there's an emergency tied closely to it from another country... does that make sense?
