2nd generation return to parent's business?

Postby whykay » Sat Jul 12, 2003 3:50 pm

Hmm, being from a background of parents as restauranteurs, I sense that sometimes there are unspoken pressure to take over the family business. But they would say outright that they work so hard and save money so we can get through school and a good third level eduction, and get a good job and wants to avoid the catering business. There are alot of mixed feelings here. But I have no interest at all to look after a restaurant, considering the pressures of insurance, bin, tax hikes, unloyal staff, and the list is endless. I still intend to stay in IT. Maybe I may change my mind sometime... I still have siblings, so there is a chance one of them may take it over... :D
I wonder what other 2nd generation folks feelings are? I know some of my cousins have gone back to their family business. Will that be me in the future, when I get sick of computers.

Hello I'm Back!

I've seen the pressure too but I've noticed that when the children decide not to take over the restaurants the parents just sell them to other restaurant owners who want to make large empires of take aways and restaurants.

Thing about that is, it's been in the family for years, and they have worked hard keeping it going. Would other family owned business be leased off instead? Are there many like us out there :?:
