Is TVB the only choice of chinese channel in europe ?
What do those who have the channel think of it ? What's good and what's not ? :D

TVB is boring cause it only has soaps soaps and more soaps.

I've gotten sick of Miss Hong Kong and the other one whatever that's called in chinese.

Unfortunately it's the best one there is. TVB from HK has most of the big stars, and good programmes, ATV is not as good unfortunately. But TVB has some interesting shows, cuisine, talk shows (awful music), films, drama which you may have missed, cartoons. They also show Japanese/Korean dramas as well. The main thing is the TVB news that is current in HK the same day. It has changed alot since it has first lauched, and offers much more, but I don't watch as I don't have it. My parents do down in Limerick, and I don't go down too often. But I do watch some stuff, not alot as I don't have the pleasure of chasing all the soaps (they are soo addictive!).

TVB Europe's great. Better than those ATV programmes - you usually don't know who those people are! The oter alternative is to get Sky Digital, they have Phoenix Channel as one of the basic packages - Though most of the shows are in mandarin, however there are some cantonese programmes (the news, soaps) - They're from ATV, so don't expect any TVB stars appearing in them.

TVB Europe

I have TVB Europe and I think it is generally getting boring, so what if it is broadcasting the stuff at a close time to HK? The porgrammes are not getting better at all. I want the korean/Jap soaps back!!! The only reason why I still watch Chinese Channel is because they would show some old classic series which I think I really good...but the New Super Trio sucks!!! The games aren't any good. I used to love The Super trio Show..from back then it used to be called Movie Buff Championship. They make the new games so boring.

Chinese TV

Actually, there are two more channels (on the Hotbird sattelite 13°E): CCTV4 all in Chinese with soaps, news, docs; CCTV4 is controlled by Chinese Authorities and is therefore subject to heavy censorship. But it is rather comprehensive on international news and for National news, you just have to read between the lines as everybody does in China. In fact some docs are quite astonishing. It also has some programs in Cantonese and Minnanhua/Taiyu (weekends 5.pm.) Some soaps are quite good, recently they've been showing a lot of soaps in modern settings

You also have Tang Dynasty Channel (??????) ; it is the total opposite of CCTV4 and is accused by the Chinese authorities of being a mouthpiece for FalunGong.?Well, I have been watching it for a while and although it does report sometimes on FalunGong, its news is rather objective. It has soaps in Chinese (guoyu) and some Korean soaps dubbed into Chinese (all mandarin) It has one hour every day in Cantonese. And a daily programm to improve your English, explained in English.?Also TVBS does have daily news from Taiwan, the exact same news as on TVBS in Taibei.

The location of TVB Europe dealers has changed : http://www.chinese-channel.co.uk/en/cs_5.php

Tis been awhile since I went to the site (wanted to find out when the Andy Lau special was on : Image... teehee, it's on Sun Dec 31st. ;) ) Anyhoo, found that the site has much improved, and the tv listings actually worked! I mailed them about it years ago to tell them that it's b0rked on firefox (not that it was working well in IE anyway :) ).

I also use the hotbird one, The chinese channels are extreamly boring, One or two good shows a week on the pheonix channel and a good documentry on CCTV 9. I never heard the chinese goverments opinion on that Falun gong channel but after wathing it for a short time it is complete BS, In many chases the events reported look staged with onlly a hand full of actors, I remember one report was set in america and the "Chinese American" police man could hardly speak english. I think the future for us to watch decent chinese tv will be online.

TVBS Europe is currently offering multi channel viewing for extra cost. Five channels is offered:
翡翠台 (the normal channel that we usually watch)
新聞台 (news channel)
娛樂新聞台 (entertainment news channel)
經典台 (old TVB drama channel)
生活台 (lifestyle channel, travel and food)
I don't really like the way that you can't just subscribe just to watch two or three channels. If you want multi channel viewing you must subscribe to all five channels. The only channels that I would actually watch if I subscribe to multi channel is 翡翠台, 新聞台 and 生活台.
TVBS Europe is some effort in keeping its programmes up to date at the moment. I noticed the drams they are broadcasting now is around 9-18 months after it has been broadcasted in Hong Kong. While some programmes such as 蘇 Good is already showing here about a week or so after they have broadcasted the programme in Hong Kong.
While the Phoenix Channel can be received by almost any receiver aligned to Eurobird satellite is very good for your pocket, its free view. While it is good for your pocket it also has its disadvantages. 國語國語國語 its target audiences are Mandarin speaking people. Only a few programmes in the Phoenix Channel is in 廣東語 Cantonese and the rest is in Mandarin. I could barely understand 國語 so the Phoenix Channel is not for me. I'll stick with TVB. I would only learn 國語 only if I am living in Hong Kong in the long term. Its useful to know 國語 while working in Hong Kong. I know the day will come when I will go back and stay in Hong Kong for the long term. : )

Any PAWS for thought?

Thanks for the update, Sa. I know the changes to satellite positioning only happened recently in Ireland.
